Tafara Wellness Initiative’s programmes are built around one central question: what does it take for mental wellness support to reach the people who need it most, and to keep reaching them long after any single session or intervention ends? Our answer is a three-part model:
Our flagship programme trains community members, including teachers, caregivers, faith leaders, youth workers, and volunteers, to become certified peer counsellors. Training is modular, practically focused, and grounded in African social contexts, languages, and lived realities.
Sessions include role-plays, real scenarios, and reflective activities. Skills learned in practice stay longer than skills learned on paper.
Training is available in-person, online, or through blended formats, making it accessible across urban centres, rural areas, informal settlements, and community hubs.
Training is only the beginning. After certification, peer counsellors join the Peer Counsellor Network, an ongoing community of practice that keeps them supported, connected, and growing.
We built the PCN because people who support others need support too. Burnout is real. Isolation is real. The PCN ensures that those who show up for their communities are not left to carry that work alone.
The insights that come back from peer counsellors in the field are among the most valuable inputs we have. What we are learning through the PCN is actively shaping how we train.
Our training has already reached communities in South Africa, Kenya, and Uganda.
Whether you are an NGO strengthening your programme teams, a school building a peer support structure, or a corporate investing in your people and wider communities, we would love to explore what a partnership with Tafara Wellness Initiative could look like.
Tafara Wellness Initiative trains community members to offer peer mental health support and walks alongside them as they carry that into the communities they already belong to. We partner with organisations across Africa to make that possible.
